The monograph The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin in Dubrovnik is the first collection of existing knowledge on this extraordinary work of Croatian sacral architecture. The book includes previous and recent scholarly findings based on field and archive research in Dubrovnik and comparative research in Italy.
The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin in Dubrovnik has an outstanding place among Croatian cathedral buildings. Built in the place of a Byzantine basilica and a Romanesque cathedral, this monumental Baroque basilica with a nave, two aisles, and a dome was constructed during the city restoration after the 1667 earthquake. It uniquely combines high aesthetic standards of the Dubrovnik financier and the Roman architect with those of contractors from Rome, Sicily, and Dubrovnik. The high-quality interior furnishing is thus as important as the prominent cathedral treasury with almost 200 reliquaries dating from the 10th to the 21st century.
The book is a result of years of research, scientific work, and systematic analysis of a large number of sources on both the origins of the cathedral and the millennial period during which it has been built and restored.
Its 600 pages include texts by experts from the Institute of Art History and other leading institutions in Croatia (Miho Demović, Igor Fisković, Katarina Horvat-Levaj, Marin Ivanović, Jelena Ivoš, Vjera Katalinić, Vinicije B. Lupis, Milan Pelc, Daniel Premerl, Radoslav Tomić, Stanislav Tuksar, Ivan Viđen and Danko Zelić); more than 800 photographs (mostly by Paolo Mofardin) of the whole structure, its interior, artwork, documents, and architectural plans (by Ivan Tenšek and Ivana Valjato-Vrus).
In five chapters, the book gives a detailed description and analysis of the architecture of the present cathedral and the two preceding ones; the design and building of the Baroque cathedral, with a special focus on its architectural typology in the context of Italian and regional styles; the Baroque furnishings (main and auxiliary altars, paintings, liturgical objects and vestments, books, organ, musical collection and treasury); and the historical context. The book is supplemented by a catalogue of artwork, list of documents, sources, and literature.
The publication of the monograph is a joint effort of three publishers: Dubrovnik City (Cathedral) Parish, Institute of Art History, and ArTresor Publishers on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the completion of the Baroque cathedral.
